Chanukah on the River Draws 800 - Dec. 05

The Mariachis are playing. The San Antonio picturesque Riverwalk is  warm and sunny. More than 60,000 fans are in the downtown area for the Nebraska/ Michigan Alamo Bowl football game.

You bet! On December 28th, an overflow crowd of 800 filled the Arneson River Theatre for the 8th Annual Chanukah on the River celebration. Kicking off the program with the famous Chanukah Boat Cruise, had hundreds of proud San Antonians riding the famous river barges, singing joyous Chanukah songs Each river barge was adorned with its very own battery powered menorah.

Following the cruise, the crowd was greeted by Rabbi Chaim Block, executive director of Chabad and welcomed to the event. After hearing from community leaders, US Congressman Henry Cuellar – District 28 Texas, lit the Shamash of the 12 ft menorah accompanied by the music of Los Caporales Mariachi Band. The other candles were lit by Rabbi Yossi Marrus program director of Chabad.

World renown, RebbeSoul Band of Los Angeles, CA performed a mix of new age/soul and Jewish rock music bringing the excited crowd to its feet.

“This event has become the largest and most attended Jewish event in San Antonio” said Rabbi Chaim Block. “The challenge now is, to come up with new ideas to make it even bigger and better for next year, but don’t worry we will with G‑d’s help” said Rabbi Yossi Marrus.
